For the handling of “bokeh” in TCQ photographs, see the guide to focus and bokeh blur

What exactly is meant by the term “bokeh”?

1. Traditionally the term “bokeh” was often used when referring to the aesthetic qualities of the out-of-focus blur in photographs.

2. More recently, however, smartphone marketers have popularized use of the term “bokeh” to cover all references to the blurry out-of-focus-appearing areas of the image.

Since the #2 usage (“the blurry out-of-focus-appearing areas of the image”) is now the public norm, that is the way the term is used on this website.
